Denby Greenwheat is one of the iconic designs produced by the Denby Pottery over the years and is perhaps one of their most recognised when wandering the.

Denby Pottery Company Ltd is a British manufacturer of pottery , named after the village of Denby in Derbyshire where it is based. It primarily sells hand-crafted stoneware tableware , kitchenware and serveware products including dinner sets, mugs and serving dishes, as well as a variety of glassware products and cast-iron cookware. The pottery at Denby was founded on the estate of William Drury-Lowe in as a manufacturer of stoneware bottles.

Bourne later took over the Codnor Park and Shipley Potteries, and merged them into the Denby works in a similar manner. Joseph Bourne took his son Joseph Harvey Bourne into partnership, and the company became known as Joseph Bourne and Son, a name it kept even after the death of Joseph Bourne in Using a new patent process for drying slip invented by Needham and Kite of Vauxhall, the pottery produced at least 25 tons of workable clay each day. In the nineteenth century most of the ware produced was salt-glazed stoneware.

Our History: Burgess and Leigh Pottery

Our history begins in , when a seam of clay was found at Denby during the construction of a road to link the industrial towns of Derbyshire. William Bourne, a local entrepreneur, examined the clay and recognised its exceptional qualities. Production of salt-glazed pottery started at Denby in from a number of small buildings on the site of the clay bed. William Bourne gave the onerous task of running the business to his youngest son, Joseph.

Known as ‘Joseph Bourne’ the pottery prospered and soon built up an international reputation for its quality bottles and jars. As glass was very expensive in the early 19th century these stoneware bottles were essential for holding commodities like preserves, pickles, ink, polish, mineral water, medicines and even ginger beer.

Went here mainly for the food shopping, great local products and produce. We had a good good look around the one shop that’s open after the lockdown, the 31st July. We went Saw JM’s cookery demonstration then did a factory visit, very educational didn’t know the clay used came from Chesterfield? We made a model Frog and painted a plate for our Granddaughter.

Very enjoyable day out. As owners and collectors of Denby tableware, we have visited the factory site many times over the years mainly to add to our dinner set collection. We visited again this week for another look round and to see if we could spot any bargains. We started off in Bourne’s tea room, which is always a good starting point for a cuppa, hot choclate, and some food. There is always a warm welcome, and the food is lovely, whether you have a snack or something more substantial they serve great hot main meals, all home made with a lot of love and care.

We then had a look round the shops. We took the chance to add to our collection in the main shop, and as ever in the factory seconds shop. The seconds shop is great for bargains – if you take the time to sort through the piles of plates and cups, it is pretty easy to find ‘seconds’ that are almost indistinguishable from firsts, at much cheaper prices.
